It happens virtually every single day on LinkedIn, Facebook, and other sites. We accept an invitation which is immediately followed by an e-mailed sales pitch. Often the service or product they are selling has nothing to do with our work, business, or interests. Sometimes fiction is added to the pitch: “Mr. Harder, after carefully researching your site, it is clear your business site isn’t optimized.” This particular example is provided because ranking is on our minds most every day.

We continually clean out our junk mail files at Inspired Work. In less than two weeks, over 3,000 e-mails have accumulated in my file. There are messages selling voicemail, fat reduction, luxury vacations, timeshares, private jet memberships, male enhancement, insurance, wealth management, pre-approved loans, and one nude cleaning service. Collectively, Americans receive over 171Billion messages per day. Every day Americans use 159 years of time just hitting the delete buttons on the spam that gets past their filters.

A great deal of electronic ink has been used to discuss the irritation of the recipients. But, what about those of us who send out unsolicited e-mails? Is spam actually doing more harm than good to their businesses?

Let’s begin the response with the spiritual and practical purpose of social media. It is and has always been to build relationships.

The spiritual and practical purpose of sales is to find out what people want and give it to them.

What happens when spam generates 1 sale for every 300,000 irritated readers? Consider the possibility that using spam is causing more harm to your business than good.

How could we kill spam for good?

Use social media to build relationships. Instead of using social media to make pitches, use it to connect with others. Instead of intruding without thought, intrude with responsibility and value. Recognize that the highest form of selling isn’t about us, it is about them.

Here is my journey on the topic. October, 2008 was one of the worst times of my life. When the economy fell off of a cliff, our organizational clients did as well. I had to let people go and downsize. That month became the 9/11 for most small business owners. For many of us, the economic nightmare required shifting from service delivery to fulltime business development.

At the time of the great recession, I had a dimissive view of social media. Every day, I got invitations to connect with someone. Usually, I never heard from them again or I started receiving spam. I used to manage sizeable sales teams and I told them, “Never, ever reach out to someone without having a good reason.” I felt that if a business development professionals was too lazy to bring value and interest to prospects they would hurt rather than help our cause.” Why? Because most people will not buy what we have on the first round or even the second round. So, developing positive perceptions is just as important as closing a deal.

Social Media was the only technology that offered a way to reach out rather than making calls and trying to get past security guards. But, the most common practices were mediocre at best. What would happen if we added good manners? How could we engage people that shifted the focus from us to them? How could we behave so new connections would want to actually engage with us?

The answers to questions became a turning point.

Here is one example of the outcome.

A year-and-a-half ago, a group of my colleagues were having breakfast at the Four Seasons in Marina del Rey. Mary Campbell was formerly my internal partner at the University of Southern California where she served as chief talent officer. Mary had used our engagement programs. The organization has 25,000 employees. Today, we are writing a new book together and she brings astonishing value to Inspired Work. Jess Todtfeld is a presentation and speaking guru in New York. We refer clients to each other. In the middle of the conversation, Mary’s expression changed and she said, “This is all so nice. How did all of us meet?” I smiled and said, “Social networking.” She continued, “What were you selling?” I laughed and said, “Nothing.”

Social media has become Inspired Work’s greatest source of new business. We teach others how to use it.

Whether you reach out or not isn’t the mission of my little article. The point is to recognize that when we throw junk into social media we will get junk in return. If we don’t have genuine respect that adds value to someone’s time, we will get disrespect in return.

One of the most gifted networking professionals that I know is a guy named Warren. He circles the country introducing people to each other. For him, introductions represent an act of love. His introductions have generated millions and millions of revenue for his friends. Today, he sits at the right hand of one of the world’s category leading CEOs. I’ve often marveled at the fact that many the people he meets begin looking for a hidden agenda. The surprise is there is no hidden agenda. As one of the largest revenue generators in that company, he is a living testament to the fact that goodwill is the most sustainable source of success in our world.

As I shared in a recent article, Social Entrepreneurs are becoming the single most impactful and positive change in the future of work. These are people who insist that changing our world for the better can be very profitable. There is also a growing group of workers, especially younger generations, that insist on working for such organizations.

Social entrepreneurs come in all shapes and sizes. This month, I encourage everyone to look at Marshall Medoff, an 81 year-old-business owner who left his business and personal life to come up with a way to produce high-yield, non-polluting fuel from cellulose. Billions have been spent in trying to find a way to do this. Medoff isn’t a scientist. But, he took global warming seriously and literally dropped out of society to focus on the problem full-time.

Instead of going down the same path as scientist, Marshall used common sense to access the sugar in plant life. The resulting fuel has stunned the scientific community. The sugar fuel that result from his process:

Powers internal combustion engines with a drop of over 80% in pollutants.

Provides a sugar for food that doesn’t rot our teeth.

Can be used immediately.

His story aried on 60-Minutes last night and after watch it, I felt it should have been the headline feature for the night.

“I just believe that the way that young people’s minds develop is fascinating. If you are doing something for a grade or salary or a reward, it doesn’t have as much meaning as creating something for yourself and your own life.”

Steve Wozniak

For several decades, I’ve have helped a wide-range of individuals in how to find the work that is most meaningful for them. I’m not a float across the room in a saffron robe to hit the gong kind of guy. Orchestrating practical success is just as critical in finding happiness with one’s work. Getting paid one’s true worth is especially difficult for individuals where the job is treated as an expense as well as in industries that are shrinking rather than growing.

When a client asks the best means of getting a raise, I begin with many of the common ways people go about this pursuit with often negative outcomes. When someone gets a new job and takes a counter-offer, he or she is now the disloyal member of team. Often, the organization is buying time to find a suitable replacement. Another big problem emerges from the “entitlement” presentation. You’ve worked at the organization for a really long time without an adequate raise. Employers don’t respond well to the entitlement, victims, and martyrs. If you’ve waited to let your frustration with pay grow to this point, you have waited way too long. Consequently, there is a tendency to overreach in asking for a raise. You want to make it as easy as possible for a boss to raise your income.

First remember this basic behavioral fact in sales:

Human beings are hard-wired to think about something other than themselves for a maximum of 15-seconds. This is why making pitches are such an ineffective way of selling anything.

If people are always thinking of themselves, than it is much healthier to not make the raise about you. Speak to his or her expectations and needs.

Be gracious. Be appreciative.

Make it clear that you enjoy working there. Tell them what kind of money you want to make and ask the question,

“What kind of problem can I solve, money that I can bring in or expenses can I save in order to make that?”

Now, zip it! Every time you try and explain your request or point-of-view, you lose power. Let the boss ask clarifying questions. Stay on point. Unless you have uncovered a significant income disparity with peers, be prepared to earn the raise. More often than not, organizational leaders welcome conversations like this. Ask, in detail, what you can do to become more valuable. Identify particulars such as time lines, deliverables, anyone that can help you as well as any other actions that can increase the probability of success.

Afterwards, send thank you note and include the agreement.

Now, go do it.

Businesses are about making and saving money.

Non profits are about finding and making good use of money.

When talking about money, center your attention on generating or saving more money and it will become easier for them to give you exactly what you want. And, if they won’t, that is important information.

Simple?

I worked with the CEO of a well-known, category-leading firm in the entertainment industry. Whenever I visited her company, I witnessed the chaos and energy that is so typical of the type of business she ran. But, what struck me the most was the fact she was always sitting in the middle of this vortex as calm as Bhudda. One day, I asked how she did it. Her response? “Early on, I knew that if I made too much of every transaction, I would be crazy. So, I adopted one simple philosophy that has always worked. It is,

“You either get the part or you don’t.”

This morning, I’m waking up to all of the messages about ending one’s relationship with Facebook.

Yesterday, I led the last installment of Inspired Social Networking and was telling our participants that we now live in the world of transparency. The tipping point for sexual harrassment happened because of social media. Job candidates can learn more about a hiring manager than the current employees (unless they look). Stories that used to take years to gain traction now take hours. Thousands of women are now running for office because of a tidal wave of information. Young people are marching on the government with greater moral clarity than the adults.

Today, anyone who believes the world cannot see them is living in a state of delusion. Now, it is Facebook’s turn. How they respond to this crisis will determine a good part of their future. Social media grew with such ferocity that developing policy and law occurs somewhat like building a plane in flight.

Facebook, Google, and other platforms make a great deal of money from sharing information. We have known this for years. All of us have something to gain in defining the morality of how that information is used.

The world will not be making a u-turn on transparency.

Live your life with nothing to hide.

Run your organization with open doors.

Peace.

How many people assume the world’s most innovative companies invent most of their technology in house? Far more innovation is found by individuals going out into the world and finding breakthroughs which they bring back. Thomas Edison did not invent the lightbulb. He networked and found the incandescent bulb that had been invented years before. Quite simply, Edison applied new ideas and knowledge to the innovations that he found from the world around him. His networking skills not only made him wildly successful, his efforts led to Edison becoming a category leader.

Developing sophisticated networking skills in all talent is nothing short of transformative in creating stronger organizations and more effective careers. Platforms such as LinkedIn offer game-changing capacity in being able to reach the very people that bring us innovation, best practices, clients, mentors, strategic partners and much stronger careers. However, to attain this kind of effectiveness requires much more than a functional understanding of social networking platforms. The last thing that you want to do is to simply teach someone how to use the features of a social media platform and assume they will establish meaningful creativity with the medium. Personally, I find the single biggest problem with social networking is how most people communicate. They hit the button “connect” and the recipient gets a note, “I would like to add you to my connections.” What does that generate? Usually, some form of “what do they want?” Once we accept the invitation one of two things usually happens:

Nothing

We get a long junk marketing e-mail pushing a product or service that they don’t want and don’t need

This is the bias that many recipients have and basic social networking skills do nothing to get past that. Prior to launching a significant social media program at Inspired Work, we designed a high-touch business development methodology that builds targeted relationships with new connections. For over twenty years, most of our business came from referrals. This only makes sense as we have a highly involved graduate and client base filled with over 43,000 professionals. But, two years ago, social media edged past the referrals.

Developing strongly effective social media skills is transformative for most individuals and intact teams. Last year, I trained a human resources group in how to use our methods. At the opening, some were excited but most were coming from, “Why are we doing this?” By the end of the day, each individual realized how much it would build their careers and their team. The process was used to increase talent acquisition performance, cut costs and improve onboarding. The team has built a profoundly better relationship with the community by building bridges with other organizations, community resources and sources for business intelligence. Now, they are visible and far more highly informed.

Last year, I was having breakfast with several colleagues. One had been in charge of talent for USC and is now my writing partner and having quite an impact on our business. Another is the gentleman who leads all of our presentations skill programs and represents us in New York. We had two other clients at the table. Collectively, they have changed the success of our business and the quality of my life. Someone asked, “This is so nice. How did we meet each other? How did this happen?” I responded, “Social networking. We all met because of social networking.” I viewed this as an affirmation because the best form is business development is the one you do not remember. In essence, that is what we want to do, to give others such high-quality attention that they remember how good it felt to engage with us.

The single biggest reason for failure is isolation. Our greatest success comes out of building the kinds of communities that support our personal as well as organizational mission, vision, and purpose.

Many of us would think that it isn’t necessary to develop these skills in coders, engineers, human resources, finance and administrative talent. However, let’s take it a step beyond the pipelines of good that come from these skills. Virtually everyone who works is dealing with the challenges of rapid change. The ability to change represents a variety of skills. The most important skill within a landscape of change is the ability to connect.

Increase the capacity to connect and nothing will get in your way.

Perhaps it is time to rethink sending out another generic note.

What happens right after we make a decision to change the business or the course of our lives?

We tell members of our tribes. The challenge with tribes is that they have rigid rituals and expectations. When we break one of those rituals, the general response is some form of, “You’re crazy.” While we rarely talk about their impact, tribes wield enormous influence over our decisions and behavior. Tribes wait for us at home, work, down the hall, across the campus, at the church, in our political parties, or at the club. Tribes determine what we wear at work, how we fit in, and what we aspire to be. Step outside the norm and we are characterized as “crazy.”

For example, we come home and tell the spouse, “I’m quitting the six-figure job I can do in a coma. In fact, I’m going to start a business that is altruistic in nature.” He responds, “Are you nuts?”

Business leaders encounter “you’re crazy” when they announce the big change in direction, “I know the budget has been cut, many of you have lost a few team members. But, you are here for a reason and this can either become a turning point or a more survival. I’m calling for a business revolution. By the end of this week, please bring your big idea to my office.” The conversations begin, “She is nuts.”

“It turns out that tribes, not money, not factories, that can change our world, that can change politics, that can align large numbers of people. Not because you force them to do something against their will. But because they wanted to connect.” So how do we connect with the tribe? Let’s begin with a basic behavioral scientific fact that humans are hard-wired to be able to think about something other than themselves for a maximum of fifteen seconds. That means that even tribal members are primarily thinking about themselves during the announcement. Therefore, it is our responsibility to connect with their needs and expectations, not ours. This is one of the many reasons the workforce has so much disengagement. We give orders to the tribe without thinking about their needs and expectations. They smile and nod. They go through the motions. Or, we make that big announcement about a life change to our family. We do it with righteousness. They push back even harder. We threaten to leave. They show us the door.

The pressures of tribes on career choices are legendary. During a particularly large Inspired Work Program, we had about a dozen men come back from lunch laughing. They had defined the Jewish mother’s hierarchy of acceptable career choices. It was all based on how one mother’s eyebrows reacted when the other shared what her son did for a living. There were three acceptable choices and each one provoked varying levels of enthusiasm. A minor rise was CPA. Halfway up the forehead? Attorney. To the hairline? Of course, it was a doctor. A specialist provoked a natural facelift. One of those gentlemen made a decision to open up a florist shop. He went through a lot of anger in how his family put down this desire for many years, pushed him to go to law school, and now it was time to move forward with his life.

But, this time he went home and talked about the negative energy he was bringing to the family for years. He shared how he wanted to come to his family with positive energy, with smiles, and with flowers. He assured his family that if the florist business failed, he always had the law to survive. He thanked his parents for putting him through law school. Later, he would use his business and legal skills to grow that florist shop into one of the largest floral businesses in the country.

Executives emerged from one of our leadership programs with the commitment to tie their new vision of a business revolution to the needs and expectations of each stakeholder. Rather than ordering the employees to simply support the new cause, they met with each member of their team. They found how to use that new vision as an opportunity to meet the aspirations of each contributor.

Of course, this doesn’t work all of the time. There are circumstances where we need to move on and find a new tribe that will support us. But, while we are there, it is always good to increase the probability of success by connecting, by listening and making every attempt to support the very people we want to support us.

We cannot have one without the other.

Inspired Social Networking

Begins on Wednesday, November 8 from 4-6 p.m.

Regardless of how skilled you are with social media, Inspired Social Networking will elevate how you experience the process and transform your results. The program blends the best of high-touch business development practices with straightforward online technology to build targeted relationships with the very people that you want in your circle. Inspired Social Networking is used by beginners and seasoned digital marketing professionals. In fact, a number of our clients use this methodology as their primary business development platform.

Inspired Social Networking takes place in four easy virtual sessions. To ensure the highest-quality attention, each program is limited to twenty participants.

What to expect:

Week One (11/8) – Inspired Online Branding

Prior to this session, Inspired Work will forward an evaluation of your existing profile on LinkedIn. This prepares for a deep dive with improving your online presentation and brand. We provide extensive course material and collectively design a profile that makes even you excited!

Week Two (11/15) – Inspired Community-Development

Once we define what we want out of lives, careers or businesses, our success is based on the quality of our support systems. You design the very communities that will bring you the perfect job, career, book deal, film deal, mentor, business intelligence, resources, and clients. So, rather than filling your community with clutter, you fill it with the people that will actively help you succeed. The payoff? By the end of this week, you will have several new connections that fit the promise.

Week Three (11/29) – Inspired Relationships

If there was a “secret sauce” to Inspired Social Networking, this is the week. Most of us have become used to the rather faceless and superficial quality that permeates a lot of online activity. We get a connection request and never hear from the person again. But, the promise of our program is to build vital and engaged relationships with the people you want in your circle. We introduce a new communications process that is high-touch, refined, inviting and definitely not “faceless.” Unlike many business development programs, there is nothing pushy about our methods. We teach you how to use a simple and progressive communications process that leads to face-to-face meetings and active relationships. Our process works equally well for newcomers as well as seasoned business development professionals.

Week Four (12/6) – The Advanced Level

Gaining traction in the social media world has several non-negotiable elements attached to it. For example, a business can no longer rely on SEO (search engine optimization) alone to drive traffic to their site. For an individual, getting online publishing can seem daunting. But, Inspired Social Networking offers a variety of right-sized approaches so that anyone can become an online publisher using methods that work for them. Quite frankly, we have yet to meet a participant who doesn’t come out of the program as a publisher with their own unique thumbprint.

David Harder, the course designer and host of Inspired Social Networking developed these processes to build Inspired Work after the recession. Recently, he reentered the traditional publishing field with over six million online readers.

Quite simply, what we teach works and it is pleasurable for everyone involved.

Who Ought to Attend:

Business owners who want to build a stronger community, client base, and other resources.

Sales professionals who want to generate better leads in shorter periods of times.

Professionals who want to build a career based on ideal mentors, business contacts and access to business intelligence.

Digital marketing professionals. Because we don’t do what you do!

Last Friday, I had elective surgery at Cedars-Sinai and am recovering quite nicely. Everyone on that staff was world-class wonderful. In the evening, the phlebotomist came to visit. When she finished, I asked how long she had been with the hospital and quickly learned she is from Chicago and putting herself through nursing school. I asked what she thought of Los Angeles. “It’s filled with such superficial, self-centered people.” Quickly, I pointed out that I was one of them and gave her the many reasons I love this town over all others. I asked, “Where have you been and how many people have you attempted to connect with?” She responded that her life was consumed with working at Cedars, driving to school and studying. I asked if she had enough spare time to turn that around and she responded, “I would love to! Do you have any suggestions?”

“Girl, get out some paper!” And, for the next fifteen minutes she wrote everything down, which included:

“Go to Musso & Franks. Have a light dinner with a dry martini. You will not understand old or new Hollywood until you have had this experience.

Drive out to the Cross Creek Country Mart in Malibu. Buy a coffee and sit near the playground enjoying the surroundings. You will see more celebrities in the next hour than an entire year in the city. Plus, you will experience what the good life in LA really means.

At least once, go to the Agape Spiritual Center of Truth. It is a wonderful place to meet people, an extraordinary spiritual development space and the service is a real show. You don’t need to become a regular unless you want to, but every Angelean ought to go at least once.

Great places to meet people include the steps in Santa Monica Canyon, Runyon Canyon, and tribes! Check-out the tribes that have similar values and interests to yours. Los Angeles is a city of tribes and we advertise. Get a subscription of Los Angeles Magazine and get LA Weekly. Each describes thousands of tribal activities in greater Los Angeles. Find the tribe that fits you. When you simply want to meet a lot of people quickly, offer to walk a friend’s cute dog and go to The Strand from Redondo Beach to Venice or Sunset Plaza. Yep, take an afternoon to stroll, shop and eat your way down the Plaza.

Pack a picnic dinner and go at least once to the Hollywood Bowl and the Greek Theatre. Buy a ticket to the Walt Disney Hall and watch Gustavo Dudamel bring classical music to vivid, rock-star quality life.

Volunteer at one of LA’s many premier charities and meet people filled with gratitude. These can include LA Family Housing, Children’s Hospital, The System, and I Have a Dream Foundation.

Go to the Getty Villa on a warm summer day and sit in the gardens imagining the world that inspired this spectacular space. Visit the Comedy Store and listen to some of America’s most outlandish comics. If they yell at you be sure to yell right back.

Go at least once to our world-famous dives – Philiipes French Dip, The Apple Pan, and Tito’s Tacos. Visit the spectacular campuses at Loyola and USC.

At the end of it all, go park your car on Hermosa or Beach Drive. Walk to the beach, go out onto the sand, sit down, and watch the sun dip behind the ocean.

Now you can make an informed decision about Los Angeles.

When we were finished, she came over and hugged me.

One suggestion for my readers –

If you live in a town you love and you find someone who isn’t finding their way, give them a helping hand. It doesn’t take much to give them the insights in how to make your home their home.

Graduating from school is one of the most important rites of passage in our lives.

But don’t expect it to look like the past! Today’s average college graduate will change careers not jobs four to six times. In practical terms what does that mean for someone graduating today?

First, the great gift of a formal education is that it shows us how to learn. Active learners already rule the world. In earlier generations, we got a degree, we got a job and we worked. Now, we learn and grow every single day. This represents a vast change in our culture but the big payoff is personal growth.

Next, the happiest careerists will understand how to use skilled self-inquiry to redirect and reinvent oneself in fulfilling ways as the world continues to accelerate around them. This is something we have been providing for years. Asking oneself the right questions produces clarity, vision, and self-confidence – traits that can be crucial with new graduates.

Finally, the life skills that all successful people have are no longer for the elite. They are requirements for all of us, especially if we intend to stay out of the scourge of under-employment. We have helped over 40,000 people understand why they need the skills of selling, influencing others, building relationships and developing effective support systems. These are skills many parents didn’t have to develop and are not taught in our school systems. The lack of these skills represents current employer’s single biggest complaint. It is a dastardly idea to assume they are going to pick them up on their own.

If you are a parent or someone that influences and mentors young people, the new graduate is often in an especially vulnerable period in coming up to speed and thriving in the work market. After decades Oh The Places You Will Gocontinues to be the #1 college graduate gift and while it speaks to many of the more innocent themes of becoming an adult, we suggest insights and skills they can use right here and right now.

If you have a fresh graduate coming into the world, this is:

We used to derive our security from a job. Today we find our security from growth.

If that’s true (and it is), consider what a vast change in consciousness and outlook this represents for most of us. In finishing my book The Workplace Engagement Solution (Career Press), I have interviewed some of America’s most respected leaders and hiring managers. It has become clear that active learners are today’s single most sought after candidates. Without that trait, the probability of having a long and effective future with any up and coming organization is practically nil.

According to Cathy Sandeen, the Chancellor from The University of Wisconsin, today’s average college graduate will change careers (not jobs) four to six times. There are other futurists who predict even more frequent transformation. The new era of work is turning generations of rote cultural behaviors upside down. For example, for hundreds of years, we went through the educational factory culminating in a degree. Once that happened, the education stopped. Now, static education is obsolete before the ink is dry. Learning content needs to be updated almost as quickly as it is written.

Today, higher education isn’t an endgame, it is another opportunity to learn how to learn. Developing muscle in that practice is key for remaining competitive in our rapidly changing environments. Those of us who understand this dynamic are changing as quickly as the world around us. There are numerous payoffs from embracing constant learning. We grow in unimaginable ways. We are renewed. We develop confidence in finding the opportunities in the waves of change rather than being swallowed whole as we look to the past. We change our outlook. Instead of stagnating we are renewed.

God help anyone with a decided lack of curiosity. The world’s most successful people read an average of 2-3 hours per day. They go to learning programs, conventions and watch Ted Talks. They pursue any session that could increase their awareness and knowledge. They cruise the Internet and read articles. I have a personal belief that reading Harvard Business Review and Atlantic Monthly increases my IQ by at least a perceived 30 points.

Right now, our politicians (on both sides of the fence) are doing more harm by promising jobs rather than telling America to get off its butt and reinvent, learn, explore, take courses and, become aware of what is actually happening in the world. We make a lot of noise about lowering unemployment but little is said about underemployment, which is a far greater scourge in our country. Most of these individuals are mired in place waiting for things to get back to normal. As candidates, they are impeached within a few minutes because if the organization has any savvy will ask questions like:

What have you learned about our market recently?

What are you currently reading?

Please tell me the most impactful thing you learned this past year?

Where do you go to get information?

How is learning impacting you today?

In 2011, I sent out an e-mail to several hundred readers we knew were looking for work and asked which employer was hiring more people in new jobs than any other organization in Los Angeles? We asked for a 24-hour turnaround to verify or give the right answer. One came back with the correct answer: Google. The rest didn’t know the tech giant had arrived in LA. In fact, Google was leasing huge blocks of commercial space in Beverly Hills, taken the Binocular Building in Venice, purchased three blocks of land behind that iconic building including Gold’s Gym and built a state-of-the-art post production complex in Playa del Rey. I found out by looking.

My colleagues send articles, books, websites, e-learning opportunities to me all of the time. They read them. At a time when some of my peers are starting to retire or slow down, we are excitedly looking at how to use virtual learning, sophisticated digital platforms and welcome the future into our business. Candidly, I don’t think we are doing anything special because this behavior ought to be the norm for most everyone.

Here are my favorite recent reads. Each one offers a learning experience unlike others:

The Inevitable – Understanding the 12 technological forces that will shape our future, Kevin Kelly (Viking)

Defenseless Under the Night: The Roosevelt Years and the Origins of Homeland Security, Matthew Dallek (Oxford)

How to Raise an Adult, Julie Lythcott-Haims, (Henry Holt & Company)

The Geography of Genius: A Search for the World’s Most Creative Places from Ancient Athens to Silicon Valley, Eric Weiner (Simon & Schuster)

This summer, look for The Workplace Engagement Solution (Career Press) from yours truly.
