										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This year, I realized that it really doesn&#8217;t matter whether I trust God or not. God goes on. But, I have learned that when I trust all will turn out and that spirit is right here, it is far easier to be happy.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>For years, many of our participants have become one-on-one clients. And then close friends. They come through our programs to define in deep detail what they want to do with their lives. Many take that and move forward without my direct involvement. It doesn&#8217;t matter how my one-on-one clients practice their spirituality, but I always tell them mine.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>There are no guarantees in life. It is far better than waiting for success; we center our energy on improving the probability of success. True optimism is the mindset of believing our actions will lead to good outcomes. Action is almost always the beginning of success. But, when we turn the results over to God, I&#8217;m always surprised.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Many of my clients have become dear friends. I&#8217;m always surprised at what happens when each takes action, trusts the outcome, and doesn&#8217;t over-manage the results. The author came for my help to move from corporate communications to a fully successful author. He gets better deals than me and is writing a new book on an island that I hope to one day in the future, spell correctly.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I think of another dear friend. You know who you are. She left a big studio job. Her imagination is wildly productive, and she uses it like magic. In our time together she never once responded to change with cynicism or contempt. I often say that when someone gets on the right path, we can&#8217;t decide whether they are playing or working. Her outcome included moving to work for one of the biggest entertainment icons in Europe. The last time we visited, her new life is filled with so much joy, that she skips through London.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I&#8217;m so ready for this year to be over. It is also the year in which we changed how we reach people by working harder than ever and turning the results over to God.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3>What do I want for you?</h3>
<ul>
<li><strong>Full employment.</strong></li>
<li><strong>Work that matters.</strong></li>
<li><strong>Work that is an extension of your real purpose.</strong></li>
<li><strong>I want you to skip down the street.</strong></li>
<li><strong>Remember there is always a solution, especially when we look.</strong></li>
</ul>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It happens virtually every single day on LinkedIn, Facebook, and other sites. We accept an invitation which is immediately followed by an e-mailed sales pitch. Often the service or product they are selling has nothing to do with our work, business, or interests. Sometimes fiction is added to the pitch: &#8220;Mr. Harder, after carefully researching your site, it is clear your business site isn&#8217;t optimized.&#8221; This particular example is provided because ranking is on our minds most every day.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We continually clean out our junk mail files at Inspired Work. In less than two weeks, over 3,000 e-mails have accumulated in my file. There are messages selling voicemail, fat reduction, luxury vacations, timeshares, private jet memberships, male enhancement, insurance, wealth management, pre-approved loans, and one nude cleaning service. Collectively, Americans receive over 171Billion messages per day. Every day Americans use 159 years of time just hitting the delete buttons on the spam that gets past their filters.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>A great deal of electronic ink has been used to discuss the irritation of the recipients. But, what about those of us who send out unsolicited e-mails? Is spam actually doing more harm than good to their businesses?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s begin the response with the spiritual and practical purpose of social media. It is and has always been <strong>to build relationships.</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The spiritual and practical purpose of sales is to find out <strong>what people want and give it to them.</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>What happens when spam generates 1 sale for every 300,000 irritated readers? Consider the possibility that using spam is causing more harm to your business than good.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>How could we kill spam for good?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Use social media to build relationships. Instead of using social media to make pitches, use it to connect with others. Instead of intruding without thought, intrude with responsibility and value. Recognize that the highest form of selling isn&#8217;t about us, it is about them.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Here is my journey on the topic. October, 2008 was one of the worst times of my life. When the economy fell off of a cliff, our organizational clients did as well. I had to let people go and downsize. That month became the 9/11 for most small business owners. For many of us, the economic nightmare required shifting from service delivery to fulltime business development.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>At the time of the great recession, I had a dimissive view of social media. Every day, I got invitations to connect with someone. Usually, I never heard from them again or I started receiving spam. I used to manage sizeable sales teams and I told them, &#8220;Never, ever reach out to someone without having a good reason.&#8221; I felt that if a business development professionals was too lazy to bring value and interest to prospects they would hurt rather than help our cause.&#8221; Why? Because most people will not buy what we have on the first round or even the second round. So, developing positive perceptions is just as important as closing a deal.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Social Media was the only technology that offered a way to reach out rather than making calls and trying to get past security guards. But, the most common practices were mediocre at best. What would happen if we added good manners? How could we engage people that shifted the focus from us to them? How could we behave so new connections would want to actually engage with us?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The answers to questions became a turning point.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Here is one example of the outcome.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>A year-and-a-half ago, a group of my colleagues were having breakfast at the Four Seasons in Marina del Rey. Mary Campbell was formerly my internal partner at the University of Southern California where she served as chief talent officer. Mary had used our engagement programs. The organization has 25,000 employees. Today, we are writing a new book together and she brings astonishing value to Inspired Work. Jess Todtfeld is a presentation and speaking guru in New York. We refer clients to each other. In the middle of the conversation, Mary&#8217;s expression changed and she said, &#8220;This is all so nice. How did all of us meet?&#8221; I smiled and said, &#8220;Social networking.&#8221; She continued, &#8220;What were you selling?&#8221; I laughed and said, &#8220;Nothing.&#8221;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Social media has become Inspired Work&#8217;s greatest source of new business. We teach others how to use it.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Whether you reach out or not isn&#8217;t the mission of my little article. The point is to recognize that when we throw junk into social media we will get junk in return. If we don&#8217;t have genuine respect that adds value to someone&#8217;s time, we will get disrespect in return.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>One of the most gifted networking professionals that I know is a guy named Warren. He circles the country introducing people to each other. For him, introductions represent an act of love. His introductions have generated millions and millions of revenue for his friends. Today, he sits at the right hand of one of the world&#8217;s category leading CEOs. I&#8217;ve often marveled at the fact that many the people he meets begin looking for a hidden agenda. The surprise is there is no hidden agenda. As one of the largest revenue generators in that company, he is a living testament to the fact that goodwill is the most sustainable source of success in our world.</p>

<p>As I shared in a recent article, Social Entrepreneurs are becoming the single most impactful and positive change in the future of work. These are people who insist that changing our world for the better can be very profitable. There is also a growing group of workers, especially younger generations, that insist on working for such organizations.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Social entrepreneurs come in all shapes and sizes. This month, I encourage everyone to look at Marshall Medoff, an 81 year-old-business owner who left his business and personal life to come up with a way to produce high-yield, non-polluting fuel from cellulose. Billions have been spent in trying to find a way to do this. Medoff isn&#8217;t a scientist. But, he took global warming seriously and literally dropped out of society to focus on the problem full-time.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Instead of going down the same path as scientist, Marshall used common sense to access the sugar in plant life. The resulting fuel has stunned the scientific community. The sugar fuel that result from his process:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li>Powers internal combustion engines with a drop of over 80% in pollutants.</li>
<li>Provides a sugar for food that doesn&#8217;t rot our teeth.</li>
<li>Can be used immediately.</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>His story aried on 60-Minutes last night and after watch it, I felt it should have been the headline feature for the night.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>Soft Skills:</strong></p>
<p><strong>Personal attributes that enable someone to interact effectively and harmoniously with other people.</strong></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Over the years, I&#8217;ve observed the words &#8220;soft skills&#8221; as a derogatory term, often used to dismiss entire categories of learning. This is done because the development of such skills requires courage. Learning how to use them can be frightening, especially if we are not used to the experience. However, a significant reason that almost half of America&#8217;s workers are underemployed is that they have not been willing to develop the very skills that will bring them into the right jobs or become successful business owners.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Wouldn&#8217;t it be more accurate to call these critically important abilities, &#8220;Courage Skills?&#8221; Not only is this more accurate, but we would have to work just a little bit harder to work through a decision to dismiss them.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>From an evolutionary point-of-view, here is why these skills have reached critical importance. Many of us would have little trouble in declaring the Industrial Revolution is over. But, few of us have identified the deeply embedded beliefs and behaviors that were imposed on all of us during that era. But, the most limiting standards of all involved how we selected work because first and foremost, work had to bring us survival and predictability. While ultimately mediocre standards, predictability, and survival portrayed a promise in which we got jobs for life and would not have to become ace salespeople, or build strong support systems, or influence others. Our employer would do that.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>In my opinion, the most tragic example of this aversion to courage skills is today&#8217;s educational landscape. Cathy Sandee, the Chancellor of the University of Alaska has been vigorously studying the impact of change on education. One of the most urgent messages from her work is that today&#8217;s average college graduate will change careers, not jobs, 4-6 times. And yet, we cannot find any schools that require skill development in sales, presentations, building communities, and etiquette. We were recently talking about this type of skill development and the Dean of the School kind of developed a glassy-eyed smile and said, &#8220;Oh, we teach life skills. Just this year, we started a class to show teenagers how to balance their checkbooks.&#8221;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Not long after, we were at an event where a someone from that same school was given an award for student of the month. She refused to come up to the podium to receive the award. From our perspective, it doesn&#8217;t really matter if the parents were lousy role models in dealing with attention, or the school did not intervene, or no one had thought of this growing requirement.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>In the end, the results will be the same: Failure to connect.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Two law students graduate at the head of their class from the same school. They go to work work for the same firm. Which one will become a partner? It will almost always be the attorney who brings in business. Task work, just like any other profession, is being removed from law firms through technology. Today, large firms will not accept lateral moves with associates unless they have a book of business ranging from $1-2Million per year. The lack of courage in learning the courage skills often shows up as a blind spot. For underemployed attorneys who continue to look the other way are finding themselves working at Legal Zoom for $25/hour.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>As technology continues to speed up and shorten the cycles of work categories, the ability to interact &#8220;effectively and harmoniously with others&#8221; is one of two foundations for our success. I have served thousands of people and organizations in getting the most out of work. This is what I have observed. The single most common ingredient behind the failure is isolation.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Building these skills require commitment. Humans have long demonstrated that we first must instill a vision in why we are going through discomfort. Afterward, invest in the training that will fulfill your vision. Find mentors who can help. Go home and tell your children, &#8220;You know what? I have been a lousy example in drawing attention from myself. I&#8217;ve been responding to the very idea with fear as if some boogie man is going to jump out from the shadows. Don&#8217;t do what I do, because in the years ahead, your ability to make a living and be happy depends on learning the skills that allow you to effectively connect with others.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>For all of us:</p>
<ul>
<li>Instead of running from bullies, learn how to handle them.</li>
<li>Rather than put up with that job you cannot stand in an industry that is shrinking, go have lunch at Toastmasters.</li>
<li>Practice contrary action. Instead of putting down social networking, learn how to use the medium to build strongly engaged relationships.</li>
<li>Set new expectations with your spouses, business colleagues, and friends. Make a commitment to learning how to draw attention to your work at a whole new level. It requires courage and you need their support in getting back on that horse until you ride comfortably and joyfully.</li>
<li>Don&#8217;t discuss your challenges with anyone who is committed to hiding. They will quickly talk you out of the venture. In other words, don&#8217;t follow them to the soup kitchen.</li>
<li>When people notice you, thank them and praise them. When we tell them, &#8220;Oh it was nothing,&#8221; we are actually telling them to not notice, evaluate and judge us.</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>In closing, the more skilled we become with courage skills, the more we connect with the world and the more we connect with ourselves.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>In the end, courage skills will help turn life into a grand adventure.</p>

If you are doing something for a grade or salary or a reward, it doesn&#8217;t have as much meaning as creating something for yourself and your own life.&#8221;</em></p>

<p>For several decades, I&#8217;ve have helped a wide-range of individuals in how to find the work that is most meaningful for them. I&#8217;m not a float across the room in a saffron robe to hit the gong kind of guy. Orchestrating practical success is just as critical in finding happiness with one&#8217;s work. Getting paid one&#8217;s true worth is especially difficult for individuals where the job is treated as an expense as well as in industries that are shrinking rather than growing.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>When a client asks the best means of getting a raise, I begin with many of the common ways people go about this pursuit with often negative outcomes. When someone gets a new job and takes a counter-offer, he or she is now the disloyal member of team. Often, the organization is buying time to find a suitable replacement. Another big problem emerges from the &#8220;entitlement&#8221; presentation. You&#8217;ve worked at the organization for a really long time without an adequate raise. Employers don&#8217;t respond well to the entitlement, victims, and martyrs. If you&#8217;ve waited to let your frustration with pay grow to this point, you have waited way too long. Consequently, there is a tendency to overreach in asking for a raise. You want to make it as easy as possible for a boss to raise your income.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>First remember this basic behavioral fact in sales:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Human beings are hard-wired to think about something other than themselves for a maximum of 15-seconds. This is why making pitches are such an ineffective way of selling anything.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>If people are always thinking of themselves, than it is much healthier to not make the raise about you. Speak to his or her expectations and needs.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Be gracious. Be appreciative.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Make it clear that you enjoy working there. Tell them what kind of money you want to make and ask the question,</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&#8220;What kind of problem can I solve, money that I can bring in or expenses can I save in order to make that?&#8221;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Now, zip it! Every time you try and explain your request or point-of-view, you lose power. Let the boss ask clarifying questions. Stay on point. Unless you have uncovered a significant income disparity with peers, be prepared to earn the raise. More often than not, organizational leaders welcome conversations like this. Ask, in detail, what you can do to become more valuable. Identify particulars such as time lines, deliverables, anyone that can help you as well as any other actions that can increase the probability of success.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Afterwards, send thank you note and include the agreement.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Now, go do it.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Businesses are about making and saving money.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Non profits are about finding and making good use of money.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>When talking about money, center your attention on generating or saving more money and it will become easier for them to give you exactly what you want. And, if they won&#8217;t, that is important information.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Simple?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I worked with the CEO of a well-known, category-leading firm in the entertainment industry. Whenever I visited her company, I witnessed the chaos and energy that is so typical of the type of business she ran. But, what struck me the most was the fact she was always sitting in the middle of this vortex as calm as Bhudda. One day, I asked how she did it. Her response? &#8220;Early on, I knew that if I made too much of every transaction, I would be crazy. So, I adopted one simple philosophy that has always worked. It is,</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>&#8220;You either get the part or you don&#8217;t.&#8221;</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Yesterday, I led the last installment of Inspired Social Networking and was telling our participants that we now live in the world of transparency. The tipping point for sexual harrassment happened because of social media. Job candidates can learn more about a hiring manager than the current employees (unless they look). Stories that used to take years to gain traction now take hours. Thousands of women are now running for office because of a tidal wave of information. Young people are marching on the government with greater moral clarity than the adults.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Today, anyone who believes the world cannot see them is living in a state of delusion. Now, it is Facebook&#8217;s turn. How they respond to this crisis will determine a good part of their future. Social media grew with such ferocity that developing policy and law occurs somewhat like building a plane in flight.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Facebook, Google, and other platforms make a great deal of money from sharing information. We have known this for years. All of us have something to gain in defining the morality of how that information is used.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The world will not be making a u-turn on transparency.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Live your life with nothing to hide.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Run your organization with open doors.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>How many people assume the world&#8217;s most innovative companies invent most of their technology in house? Far more innovation is found by individuals going out into the world and finding breakthroughs which they bring back. Thomas Edison did not invent the lightbulb. He networked and found the incandescent bulb that had been invented years before. Quite simply, Edison applied new ideas and knowledge to the innovations that he found from the world around him. His networking skills not only made him wildly successful, his efforts led to Edison becoming a category leader.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Developing sophisticated networking skills in all talent is nothing short of transformative in creating stronger organizations and more effective careers. Platforms such as LinkedIn offer game-changing capacity in being able to reach the very people that bring us innovation, best practices, clients, mentors, strategic partners and much stronger careers. However, to attain this kind of effectiveness requires much more than a functional understanding of social networking platforms. The last thing that you want to do is to simply teach someone how to use the features of a social media platform and assume they will establish meaningful creativity with the medium. Personally, I find the single biggest problem with social networking is how most people communicate. They hit the button &#8220;connect&#8221; and the recipient gets a note, &#8220;I would like to add you to my connections.&#8221; What does that generate? Usually, some form of &#8220;what do they want?&#8221; Once we accept the invitation one of two things usually happens:</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<ul>
<li>Nothing</li>
<li>We get a long junk marketing e-mail pushing a product or service that they don&#8217;t want and don&#8217;t need</li>
</ul>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>This is the bias that many recipients have and basic social networking skills do nothing to get past that. Prior to launching a significant social media program at Inspired Work, we designed a high-touch business development methodology that builds targeted relationships with new connections. For over twenty years, most of our business came from referrals. This only makes sense as we have a highly involved graduate and client base filled with over 43,000 professionals. But, two years ago, social media edged past the referrals.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Developing strongly effective social media skills is transformative for most individuals and intact teams. Last year, I trained a human resources group in how to use our methods. At the opening, some were excited but most were coming from, &#8220;Why are we doing this?&#8221; By the end of the day, each individual realized how much it would build their careers and their team. The process was used to increase talent acquisition performance, cut costs and improve onboarding. The team has built a profoundly better relationship with the community by building bridges with other organizations, community resources and sources for business intelligence. Now, they are <em>visible and far more highly informed.</em></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Last year, I was having breakfast with several colleagues. One had been in charge of talent for USC and is now my writing partner and having quite an impact on our business. Another is the gentleman who leads all of our presentations skill programs and represents us in New York. We had two other clients at the table. Collectively, they have changed the success of our business and the quality of my life. Someone asked, &#8220;This is so nice. How did we meet each other? How did this happen?&#8221; I responded, &#8220;Social networking. We all met because of social networking.&#8221; I viewed this as an affirmation because the best form is business development is the one you do not remember. In essence, that is what we want to do, to give others such high-quality attention that they remember how good it felt to engage with us.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The single biggest reason for failure is isolation. Our greatest success comes out of building the kinds of communities that support our personal as well as organizational mission, vision, and purpose.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Many of us would think that it isn&#8217;t necessary to develop these skills in coders, engineers, human resources, finance and administrative talent. However, let&#8217;s take it a step beyond the pipelines of good that come from these skills. Virtually everyone who works is dealing with the challenges of rapid change. The ability to change represents a variety of skills. The most important skill within a landscape of change is the ability to <em>connect.</em></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Increase the capacity to connect and nothing will get in your way.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Perhaps it is time to rethink sending out another generic note.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>What happens right after we make a decision to change the business or the course of our lives?</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We tell members of our tribes. The challenge with tribes is that they have rigid rituals and expectations. When we break one of those rituals, the general response is some form of, &#8220;You&#8217;re crazy.&#8221; While we rarely talk about their impact, tribes wield enormous influence over our decisions and behavior. Tribes wait for us at home, work, down the hall, across the campus, at the church, in our political parties, or at the club. Tribes determine what we wear at work, how we fit in, and what we aspire to be. Step outside the norm and we are characterized as &#8220;crazy.&#8221;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>For example, we come home and tell the spouse, &#8220;I&#8217;m quitting the six-figure job I can do in a coma. In fact, I&#8217;m going to start a business that is altruistic in nature.&#8221; He responds, &#8220;Are you nuts?&#8221;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Business leaders encounter &#8220;you&#8217;re crazy&#8221; when they announce the big change in direction, &#8220;I know the budget has been cut, many of you have lost a few team members. But, you are here for a reason and this can either become a turning point or a more survival. I&#8217;m calling for a business revolution. By the end of this week, please bring your big idea to my office.&#8221; The conversations begin, &#8220;She is nuts.&#8221;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>“It turns out that tribes, not money, not factories, that can change our world, that can change politics, that can align large numbers of people. Not because you force them to do something against their will. But because they wanted to connect.” So how do we connect with the tribe? Let&#8217;s begin with a basic behavioral scientific fact that humans are hard-wired to be able to think about something other than themselves for a maximum of fifteen seconds. That means that even tribal members are primarily thinking about themselves during the announcement. Therefore, it is our responsibility to connect with their needs and expectations, not ours. This is one of the many reasons the workforce has so much disengagement. We give orders to the tribe without thinking about their needs and expectations. They smile and nod. They go through the motions. Or, we make that big announcement about a life change to our family. We do it with righteousness. They push back even harder. We threaten to leave. They show us the door.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The pressures of tribes on career choices are legendary. During a particularly large Inspired Work Program, we had about a dozen men come back from lunch laughing. They had defined the Jewish mother’s hierarchy of acceptable career choices. It was all based on how one mother&#8217;s eyebrows reacted when the other shared what her son did for a living. There were three acceptable choices and each one provoked varying levels of enthusiasm. A minor rise was CPA. Halfway up the forehead? Attorney. To the hairline? Of course, it was a doctor. A specialist provoked a natural facelift. One of those gentlemen made a decision to open up a florist shop. He went through a lot of anger in how his family put down this desire for many years, pushed him to go to law school, and now it was time to move forward with his life.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>But, this time he went home and talked about the negative energy he was bringing to the family for years. He shared how he wanted to come to his family with positive energy, with smiles, and with flowers. He assured his family that if the florist business failed, he always had the law to survive. He thanked his parents for putting him through law school. Later, he would use his business and legal skills to grow that florist shop into one of the largest floral businesses in the country.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Executives emerged from one of our leadership programs with the commitment to tie their new vision of a business revolution to the needs and expectations of each stakeholder. Rather than ordering the employees to simply support the new cause, they met with each member of their team. They found how to use that new vision as an opportunity to meet the aspirations of each contributor.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>Of course, this doesn&#8217;t work all of the time. There are circumstances where we need to move on and find a new tribe that will support us. But, while we are there, it is always good to increase the probability of success by connecting, by listening and making every attempt to support the very people we want to support us.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>We cannot have one without the other.</p>

We teach you how to use a simple and progressive communications process that leads to face-to-face meetings and active relationships. Our process works equally well for newcomers as well as seasoned business development professionals.</p>

<p>The numbers speak for themselves.</p>
<ul>
<li>48% of Americans view themselves as underemployed. In other words, they are living from paycheck to paycheck. It is impossible for people to have self-esteem if they are not having a direct experience of productivity. Essentially, this number indicates that half of today&#8217;s workers are not keeping up with change.</li>
<li>Only 13% of the world’s workers fit the criteria of being engaged. That means that 87% are not fully awake at the wheel. Billions of profit are lost to these figures every single day.</li>
<li>Today’s college graduates will change careers, not jobs, four to six times.</li>
</ul>
<p>The exponential growth of knowledge is transmuting our previous world into one that requires an awakening within all workers. Employers that aspire to play any type of economic leadership will recognize that everyone is responsible for the retooling of tomorrow&#8217;s worker. Inaction and a one-dimensional fixation on short-term gains will rapidly grow the problem. The problem is bigger than simply making profits. Without a mindful intervention, obsolescence eventually becomes everyone&#8217;s problem.</p>
<p>Right now, the government is distracted by turf protection with little hope it will effectively lead an awakening with the necessary scope. On the other hand, employers have a vested interest in developing awakened talent to stay competitive or perhaps, even in business. Right now, arguments can be made that employers are doing more to positively change the world than any government. We see many glimmers of hope but the wave of change around us requires that we inspire more leaders to awaken as well as everyone around them. For those of us who are aware of the problem, a case can be made that we are even more responsible for helping others along.</p>
<p>In <em>The Workplace Engagement Solution</em> (Career Press), I propose that building engaged workers <em>is</em> our future. When employers develop engaged workers, not only are they creating the most productive environments on earth, they are also solving the malaise of underemployment. You see, our problem isn’t economic. Our problem is one of consciousness, wakefulness, enthusiasm, and above all, growth. The current state of disengagement isn&#8217;t just a business problem because it infects every aspect of our culture.</p>
<p>Through the success of our programs, I have reached the conclusion that we cannot have engagement unless we teach people how to change. In fact, learning and the development of talent are becoming two of the most important facets for a bright future. Talent executives play a critical and courageous role in this venture. Give them more latitude than developing a few executives or teaching a few technical courses. The truth is most organizations need a fully reinvented workforce to make use of the changes coming towards us.</p>
<p>The skills to change one self, to pivot on a dime, to stay ahead of the game, are all learnable. Employers have a growing need to build the very workers that understand how to do this. That light at the end of the tunnel is a bright wave that will wash the past away. The swell is actually filled with opportunity. But, to make use of these opportunities, we need to help anyone that works to develop the skill and gifts that drive effective reinvention. We need to help everyone who works to shift from the notion that security is satisfied through that old quest for predictability and survival. The new game to derive our security from our capacity to learn and change. For those of us who get this, great fulfillment can be derived by mentoring others.</p>
<p>If we do not take care of our workers today, who will take care of them tomorrow?</p>
<p>If we help all workers learn how to change and engage what kind of outcome can we expect our organization, our economy, and the community around us?</p>
